FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SiCortex “Science to Science” Webcast Series to Feature Parallel Programming Models Presentation by Dr. Barbara Chapman

University of Houston Computer Scientist to Examine Leading Edge Parallel Programming Models for Next Generation Computer Architectures
May 13, 2009

WHAT: SiCortex, Inc., maker of the world’s most energy-efficient high-productivity computing (HPC) systems, will host the next installment of its “Science to Science” Webinar series, a global industry forum highlighting the use of HPC systems in advancing scientific discovery.

University of Houston Professor of Computer Science Barbara Chapman will present “Parallel Programming for Multicore Platforms”. The rapid growth in parallel computing is drawing attention to application developers’ need for parallel programming languages and extensions that exploit new hardware architectures without requiring lengthy code redevelopment or sacrificing program portability. Dr. Chapman will survey the landscape of parallel programming models. She will discuss how different language extensions, including OpenMP, can be used to develop parallel applications and share insights into how it will evolve to meet the needs of future application developers.

WHY: In each installment of the series, scientists from renowned academic institutions present the results of groundbreaking research projects and discuss the implications of their findings using dynamic visual presentations. The previous Science-to-Science webcast featured an Astrophysics research team from Louisiana State University presenting their work on simulating black holes and gamma-ray bursts. Future webcasts will feature research results and thought-provoking discussions in physics, earth sciences, computer science and ecology.
